Creation of SSRFC

The Society of Student-Run Free Clinics (SSRFC) is an initiative started by students through a progression of conferences focused on harnessing the passion of student-run clinics across the nation. This started with the Society of Teachers of Family Medicine (STFM) pre-conference in Portland, Oregon in 2008 and later a follow up conference in Washington D.C. through the National Summit of Clinicians for Healthcare Justice at George Washington University in 2009.  That same year, a group of students from the University of Nebraska led a meeting for student-run free clinics titled “Sharing the Vision.”  In addition, STFM continued their student-run free clinic pre-conference series at their 2009 meeting in Savannah, Georgia. These meetings brought together a highly motivated group of students with a plan to create a national group that would allow for collaboration between clinics, idea sharing, and support for one another. This vision was realized with the creation of the SSRFC and our inaugural meeting in Jacksonville, Florida in 2010.

We would like to take the time to acknowledge the founding committee and all the work put into creating this group.  Alexander Feng, Craig Johnson, Max Kates, Tyler Ketterl, Hadar Lev-tov, Adam Mecca, Deepa Rani Nandiwada, Melissa Pe, Marcia Slone, Logan Schneider, Natalie Stavas, and of course the faculty advisors –  Dr. Ellen Beck, Dr. Wanda Gonsalves, Dr. Mary Marfisee, and Dr. Richard Usatine.

Mission

The Society of Student-Run Free Clinics will develop a national interprofessional platform for student-run clinics through both an annual conference, website, and newsletter in order to increase communication to foster the sharing of ideas, to collaborate on research, to provide funding resources and to expand the existing scope of clinics as well as cultivate the growth of the new ones.

Vision

SSRFC aims to become a national, collective voice representing student-run, free clinics. Our vision is to promote and support the existence of student-run clinics at every health science center. Through our unified strength, we aim to advocate for both resources and health policy that benefits our patients, and to develop a national network to help sustain student-run, free clinics. We truly strive to be an interdisciplinary organization and welcome members from all aspects of healthcare including medical, osteopathic, dental, physical therapy, pharmacy, or any group that has a student run clinic.
